Safety Rules for Standing on Hangar Buses

Core Safety Rules for Standing on Hangar Buses

    • For your safety, only stand where then are no available seats.
    • Maintain Handholds: You must hold on to handrails, seat backs, or grab poles at all times while the bus is in motion.
    • No Standing Area: You must stand behind the designated “driver line” to ensure the driver has an unobstructed view of mirrors and windows and you are away from the windscreen in case of emergency stops.
    • Prepare for Stops: Be ready for the bus to stop abruptly or lurch during turns. Maintain a firm grip until the vehicle comes to a complete stop.

Capacity and Legal Limits

    • Maximum Occupancy: Every bus has a legal limit for standing passengers, which is clearly marked on interior signage. Driver will indicate ‘bus full’ sign refuse further boarding once this limit is reached or space exhausted and depart ahead of schedule.
    • Priority Seating: If you are standing and a seat becomes available, you should take it unless you need to stand. Conversely, if you are seated, you are encouraged to give up your seat or pregnant or elderly passengers who would otherwise have to stand.
    • Wheelchair Spaces: Standing is often permitted in wheelchair bays only when they are not occupied by a wheelchair user. You must vacate this space immediately if a wheelchair user boards.

Etiquette for Standees

    • Move Down the Bus: If a seat is available fill that before standing. Move as far back as possible to allow other passengers to board and prevent crowding near the entrance.
    • Bags and Items: Keep backpacks and personal items in the luggage rack at your feet or in front of you to avoid hitting other passengers or blocking the aisle.
    • Communication: Do not talk to or distract the driver while they are driving unless there is an emergency.

Last but not Least Crew Have Priority

    • If standing you may be asked to exit and wait for the next bus, if there is no space for crew members as crew have priority over other service users. Please comply quickly to avoid delay to crew.
